Lockout Hasp

A lockout hasp is a multi-lock device at the heart of group lockout. It allows several authorised workers to each fit their own padlock at a single isolation point, so the energy source cannot be re-energised until every last lock is removed. E-Square manufactures the widest hasp range in the market: from vinyl-coated, powder-coated steel, full stainless steel to aluminium, non-conductive dielectric, pre-labelled and chain-equipped hasps. E-Square supplies them directly to industrial buyers across 109+ countries.

    What is a Lockout Hasp?

A lockout hasp is a group lockout device with a row of lock holes that lets multiple workers each attach their own safety padlock at a single energy-isolation point at once. The lockout safety hasp holds the isolation device in the safe position and because every worker’s padlock must be removed before the hasp can come off, no one can restore energy while anyone else is still working. That one-lock-per-person principle is the backbone of OSHA’s group-lockout requirements and the reason the hasp sits at the centre of every multi-person energy-control procedure. Hasps work on breakers, disconnects, valves and machine isolation points, paired with personal padlocks and tags.

How to Choose the Right Lockout Hasp

Picking the correct hasp comes down to five practical questions:

    • How many workers can lock on a lockout hasp?
One worker per hole – so match the hole count to the maximum number of authorised workers expected on the job. E-Square hasps range from 3 through to 24 hole units.
    • What size is the isolation eye on the equipment side?
The jaw must pass cleanly through the lockout point. Choose the 25 mm (1″) Small for standard isolation point eye on the equipment and the 38 mm (1.5″) Premier for larger or higher-strength points.
    • Is it an electrical task?
For any work near live parts, choose a dielectric (nylon) hasp – short or long flexible shackle, or a slider/pop-up lockout hasp. These are fully non-conductive, eliminating shock and spark risk.
    • What is the environment?
For corrosive, marine, food or pharmaceutical areas choose stainless steel; for everyday plant use, vinyl-coated or powder-coated steel; for frequent carrying, aluminium.
    • Is the point oversized or inconvenient to place a LOTO hasp?
Where a jaw won’t fit: large valves, gates or remote points, a lockout hasp with chain loops around the obstruction.

    Benefits of E-Square Lockout Hasps

E-Square hasps make group lockout simple, visible and dependable for every shift:

    • True group protection: Multiple lock holes let every worker control their own safety; the energy stays isolated until the last lock is off.
    • The widest material choice: Steel, stainless steel, aluminium and dielectric in one catalogue, so every hazard and environment is covered.
    • Confident, positive grip: Robust jaws hold securely without flexing under the weight of multiple padlocks.
    • Built-in accountability: Key-storage and labelled “Do Not Operate” variants reinforce procedure at the point of use.
    • Customisation available: Colour coding by department or shift, plus laser engraving and private labelling for branded LOTO programs.

    Compliance & Standards

E-Square lockout hasps are designed to meet OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 requirements for the control of hazardous energy, directly supporting the group-lockout provisions in which each authorised employee applies a personal lock to a single device. Dielectric models add a non-conductive safeguard for electrical isolation tasks.

For international operations, our hasps also support energy-control programs aligned with:

    • AS/NZS 4024 (Australia / New Zealand)
    • EN ISO 14118: prevention of unexpected start-up (UK / Europe)
    • CSA Z460 (Canada)

Regulatory requirements vary by jurisdiction and industry. Always verify current requirements with your local authority or a qualified safety professional.

Lockout Hasp - Frequently Asked Questions

A lockout hasp is used to let several workers lock out a single energy-isolation point at the same time, each with their personal padlock. The equipment cannot be re-energised until every worker has removed their lock, which is exactly what a compliant group-lockout procedure requires on shared machinery, valves and electrical panels.

It depends on the model. E-Square hasps range from compact 3 hole up to 24 hole hasps for large planned shutdowns. Match the number of holes to the maximum number of authorised workers expected on the job, and choose a higher-capacity or heavy-duty hasp for big crews.

The figure refers to the jaw opening. The 25 mm (1") "Small" hasp suits standard isolation eyes and is the everyday choice, while the 38 mm (1.5") "Premier" hasp has a wider jaw for larger isolation points and offers greater strength when several padlocks are applied. Choose the Premier when the lockout eye is bigger or the job demands extra robustness.

Use a dielectric (nylon) lockout hasp for any electrical task. E-Square offers short and long flexible dielectric hasps and slider, pop-up and group dielectric hasps (fully non-conductive), removing the risk of shock or sparking near live parts. Steel or stainless hasps should be reserved for mechanical isolation where there is no electrical hazard.
